Well, well Mr. Stark..
Iron Man 3. Of all the movies I have watched and loved this year, I think Downey Jr's third solo outing as the mini-mecha may very well be the best. I think what I enjoyed- and appreciated- most was the focus on character-building. Too many movies of this kind are mere vehicles to the big action moments, the spectacle of city-destroying proportion.
And while Iron Man 3 does have these moments it is nicely balanced out by the quieter scenes of Stark dragging a badly damaged suit (his armour against terrorists, aliens and his own personal demons) through an empty snow scene. There are also warmer comedy moments- Stark's scenes with ten year old Harley are some of the funniest.
The ending itself was, I felt, perhaps a little rushed- as if the last scenes of Stark "fixing" Pepper and himself, of returning to the ruin of his house feels like a goodbye that was reluctantly said. Of course- out side of Avengers sequels- this could be the very last time we see Downey Jr as Iron Man, and recalling that fact had me sharing that sense of reluctance..
Because as we all know- Robert Downey Jr IS IRON MAN..
