Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D first episode!

Well now, here's a series I can sink my teeth into!

There are plenty of questions in the first episode- what secrets are the SHIELD higher ups keeping about Coulson's miraculous resurrection and recovery, who are the people behind the Centipede project, how the heck are they getting their grubby little mitts on so much of the left-overs from the Battle of New York if SHIELD swept in and cleaned up by the "next day" (methinks it's an leak in the agency. SHIELD's own version of Snowden?), not to mention where they got hold of Extremis (seeing as Killian didn't seem the type to share- maybe AIM is still alive and kicking? Maybe they're the ones behind Centipede?!?!?).

SO many questions in one episode, its a little worrying incase it doesn't pan out.

And, personally, I had a few problems with it. But only from a character point of view.

Coulson is a character who, over the course of the various separate Marvel movies, we have grown to know and love. Which is why so many fans wept (metaphorically speaking) when he was brutally "killed" by Loki (and boy will payback be sweet..). But right now, 15 minutes after I've finished watching it, I couldn't tell you the name of any of the other principle characters without looking it up.

The other male lead (who I've looked up as Grant Ward), was the typical "bad cop" to Coulson's good. Melinda May (played by Ming-Na Wen) was of more interest, but was a little underused, especially as it turns out she's got kick-ass moves and seems to be the Romanoff of the series. The geeks Iain De Caestecker and Elizabeth Henstridge are both ably played, but could really be rolled into one character- which is a shame, they really need some more banter to distinguish between the two (or take a leaf out of Pacific Rim's book and separate their scientists more into "stuffy" and "rock star" personalities).

BUT this is just the first episode. The team behind such a huge and successful franchise will know-doubt be answering all these questions and threading in all these different character arcs over the next few weeks- the first episode is such a rush, in terms of introducing so much to an audience that can sometimes be overly cynical, that it's impossible to pleas everyone in one 45 minute episode.

I shall be awaiting the next episode with eager anticipation..
