NOT JUST a good looking cast of under 30's here, no sir. Teen Wolf has surprised many who believed the idea of taking an 80's movie (which was, let's face it, largely underwhelming) and giving it a 21st century re-vamp. Made by MTV of all people. Many saw the preview and immediately described it as the worst piece of sh*t this side of the Atlantic. A lot of people saw the first episode and decided it was a concept that didn't translate well on screen, that most of it's young cast were unwatchable and the "witty one-liners" tried too hard to be Buffy and fell far short of the target.
Even I had my doubts after seeing the premiere. But unlike some, it seems, I was a little more optimistic about its future. Of course there were things I didn't like. The first couple of episodes seemed to either drag on or go too quickly. BUT there were more things I liked! The werewolf factor was a big draw. In recent years (thanks to Twilight, which if you know me, I don't think much of) Vampires have been the focus of authors and movie/tv producers. And yeah, fine, for a while it was interesting (Being Human was the closest, I think, to a true modern take on an old legend), but I've always thought Vampires were overrated- they don't really represent the human condition. Unless your condition is blood-thirsty and undead. Werewolves are animalistic, and humans are animals. There is a deep-seated fear, associated with the base urges of man to be explored in Werewolf stories. Especially where teenagers are involved. So that was a good enough reason to keep going with the show.
Another was the cast. For most of them (it seemed) this was their first or largest or potentially longest production gig. I've made this comment before but I'll repeat myself anyway- Dylan O'Brien (second picture below) stood out for me in that first episode the most. At times he (with or without the creative team's input) seemed to be emulating Xander from Buffy, which could've been annoying, except that O'Brien seemed more than capable of bringing more than just comedy into the character. He also brought heart.
And of course the longer I stuck with it the more involved, and slick the season became and the more rounded the rest of the characters became. Not to mention the increasing squick factor- which was surprisingly high for an MTV production considering it's target audience. I could feel validated in my enjoyment of the show when reviews from SFX Magazine started giving it higher and higher starred ratings, and the message boards started to fill with praise.
So here we are, at season 3B (with a fourth season green-lit). And now I have a problem. I cannot enjoy this show anymore.
Not because it's gotten worse.
But because it isn't airing in the UK.
So to those who aren't watching it and are considering it every time they see it coming up on their tv schedule.. Please do.
For me, enjoy this show and support the cast and crew where the fans in the UK cannot.
Oh, enjoy the pics too.
